Aswad Abasi and the Spice of Life | American clothing designer Aswad Abasi’s work and fashion philosophy seem to center around a couple of alliterative words: variety and versatility. The 37-year-old DC native’s artistic inclinations initially seemed to be towards music; in 10th grade he began attending the Duke Ellington School, where he focused on percussion and minored in piano. Even then, the stage was set for his art to manifest itself in a manner both diverse and widely relatable. Abasi’s interest in learning piano repertoire was driven by his desire to have “people relate to the song [he was] playing.” Studying music, Abasi explains, enabled him to “relate to different styles” of composition.
